Campus to Career: Mock Interviews & Career Advice with Dolby

Do you have a job or internship interview coming up? Or do you plan to apply to one in the near future? One of the best and easiest ways to maximize your chances of getting hired is to practice interviewing! We are now encouraging you to join professionals from Dolby to hone your interviewing skills ahead of your next job search. Headquartered in San Francisco, CA, Dolby is a software company that specializes in audio noise reduction, audio encoding/compression, spatial audio and HDR imaging. However, employees at the session will include experts in Human Resources, Sales, Finance, Customer Service, and more.

 

At our event with Dolby this month, we will hold a one-on-one workshop to prepare you for questions you are likely to encounter in interviews. It's also an excellent opportunity to connect with professionals who have rich working experience in corporate and software industries. Some may also be former international students themselves! Come prepared to ask questions in order to gain insights and advice from knowledgeable sources.

One To World Meet-Up: Wonderville Bar & Arcade in Brooklyn

Who wants to play the world’s only 10-player strategy arcade game? It’s called Killer Queen. Each Wednesday, there is a group of NYC locals who play in a round-robin tournament at a bar in Brooklyn called Wonderville. This is a great opportunity to meet other international students, explore a new place, and engage with a community of people who are passionate about cooperative gaming! There are also many other arcade games to check out while we are visiting this unique scene.

Fulbright Holiday Party

For thousands of years, the month of December has been a time for people to gather together to celebrate the coming of winter with music, food, and drink. Please join One To World staff and fellow Fulbright students and scholars on December 8th from 6:00pm – 9:00pm at The Lesbian & Gay Center in the West Village for our very own winter holiday celebration.

 

Fulbright Scholar Explore New York City Tour

Join fellow Fulbright scholars and their families for a private tour of Manhattan led by native New Yorker and founder of NYSee Tours, Mr. Fred Pflantzer. On this tour, we will visit many diverse “neighborhoods” that make up Manhattan by getting to know some of NYC’s most famous attractions in a guided group! We’ll start off our trip at the National Museum of the American Indian, where a more informed understanding of the Native residents on this land will be fostered. After this amazing perspective of the country's history, we will drive through Manhattan’s world-famous attractions, such as the 9/11 Memorial, World Trade Center, Little Islands, Chelsea Piers, Central Park and more locations in-between! We will conclude the day with an early group dinner at a delicious restaurant in the Lincoln Square area of Manhattan.

United Nations: Private Tour & Briefing

Join us for a day at the United Nations! Not only will you participate in an hour-long guided tour of this renowned institution, but you will also have the unique opportunity to attend a private briefing led by a UN official on the topic of the UN sustainable development goal, climate. Don't miss out on this great chance to get a behind-the-scenes look of the UN's operations!

 

You'll also have the choice to spend extra time at the stores at the United Nations Headquarters and grab lunch with the group after the briefing.

Museum Visit: Liberty Science Center in Jersey City

Have you ever looked up at the sky and wondered what exists beyond? This November, One to World wants to bring the universe to our student community! Join us on a museum trip to the Liberty Science Center (LSC), where you will have the chance to visit various science exhibitions and utilize numerous educational resources to explore the beauty of nature.

 

At LSC, you will get to witness the original Hoberman sphere designed by Chuck Hoberman and the largest planetarium in the Western Hemisphere - the Jennifer Chalsty Planetarium, featuring incredible 3D shows of the night sky and distant galaxies!

 

LSC is an interactive learning center of science and technology that intends to inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers, located at the Liberty State Park in Jersey City, New Jersey. It contains 12 museum exhibition halls, including a live animal collection with 110 species, giant aquariums, live simulcast surgeries, hurricane-and-tornado-force wind simulators, and many more interesting exhibits. There will also be free time to explore the museum on your own before returning back to the city as a group.

One To World Tour: Visit to St. John the Divine

Here is your chance to participate in a 60-minute guided tour to view one of the most famous churches in NYC--- the Cathedral of St. John the Divine and its amazing architectural aesthetics, to hear about its history and cultural significance through in-depth story-telling.

You'll also have the unique opportunity to participate in a conversation after the tour with Frank Brown, the President of the church's board and Advisory Director of General Atlantic. Beyond his affiliation with St. John the Divine, Mr. Brown has a diverse background in global risk management, leading an international business school, a 26-year career at PricewaterhouseCoopers, and much more, so you are encouraged to come prepared with questions!

 

From this experience, you’ll learn all about the church’s original design conception, and its transformation and construction by seeing examples of architectural features that demonstrate Gothic Revival architecture. From its design conception in 1888, to its opening just one week before the bombing of Pearl Harbor, you’ll leave with a greater understanding of the church’s historic importance in New York City.

You'll take a day trip to Westchester County, where you'll be paired with a host family to have Thanksgiving Dinner. Experience a day in the life of an NYC local! For this day-long event, you'll be paired with a New York resident, and together you'll explore their favorite things to do in the city. In the past, our hosts have taken students to visit their home, shared lunch at a restaurant in their neighborhood, walked the Brooklyn Bridge, explored an art gallery, and much more. This is a great opportunity to go beyond the famous sites of the city and learn about New York life and culture through the eyes of the people who live here.
