In an effort to offer meaningful educational exchanges between Fulbright grantees, One To World will continue its ongoing series where Fulbright scholars will have a platform to share their research to Fulbright student and scholar attendees.

At our third session of the 2021-2022 academic year, our presenter will be Fulbright scholar from Israel, Tamar Rotman, who is doing her research at the Department of Classics at Columbia University. In her talk, she will discuss a few early medieval texts she is currently study and give a glimpse into the lively history of the early Middle Ages.

Tamar is a historian of the late antique and early medieval Mediterranean, focusing on the period's cultural, social, and religious history, with a particular emphasis on hagiography and the cults of saints, identity constructions, and the dynamics between the various Mediterranean polities. Her book, Hagiography, Historiography and Identity in Sixth Century Gaul: Rethinking Gregory of Tours was recently published with Amsterdam University Press (December 2021).

As a historian of a period of significant transformations, Rotman mainly studies how people reacted to these changes, how they envisioned their communities, defined their identities, and drew imagined and physical boundaries between different people, nations, and polities.

Story Circles is a group of people who share stories in response to a particular topic in a structured way that encourages full and authentic participation in both listening to and sharing personal stories.

At this event, each participant will take turns sharing responses to pre-determined prompts and reacting to what other students share. The prompts will be provided in advance to give you time to gather your thoughts. Each prompt will revolve around your own unique cultural experiences and won’t require any additional research or preparation. Dr. Frank Dolce, designer of these virtual story-sharing events, will facilitate the story-sharing session.

You've likely absorbed the famous Manhattan skyline from the popular Staten Island Ferry, or from visits to other boroughs, but have you enjoyed these views on a party boat with a few hundred new and existing friends? This floating party is One To World's biggest event and it's back after a two year hiatus! Celebrate the end of the semester by dancing the night away on the ship deck with a live DJ, 600 international students, and other friends of One To World!

Mala Desai is an organizer of the All Indian Dance Festival taking place at Carnegie Hall this weekend that will feature a performance of poetry and dance styles from across India. While we no longer have tickets available for the concert itself, don't miss the chance to meet with Mala directly on Monday to learn more about her interesting background!

Mala earned her Diploma from The Guru Mayadhar Raut School of Odissi Dance, and has performed professionally in India and the USA for over 25 years. Most recently, Mala performed for "Deeksha 2008" and "Nritya Parichaya" in October 2009 at the India International Center in New Delhi, followed by a presentation of Abhisarika Nayika for "Mangala" in November 2009 in Nassau County. She performed for "Yaatra," an International Festival celebrating Padmashri Guru Mayadhar Raut's 80th birthday in July 2010 in New Delhi, at the Stein Auditorium, India Habitat Center.

We will meet with Mala for an Artist talk on Monday to learn about her experiences as an international artist based New York, working to keep Indian traditions alive, while embracing new ones. The talk will take place from 4 - 5:30 PM at the Freedom Tower (One World Trade Center), so don't miss this chance to hear about this beautiful art form, while enjoying some great views of Manhattan!

At our second session of the 2021-2022 academic year, Our presenter will be Fulbright scholar, Glyn Robbins from the United Kingdom, who will share his research on real estate development in New York (particularly the Bronx), and its effects on the community.

In March 2018, the City of New York, in the face of strong community opposition, approved the re-zoning (i.e. change of land use regulations) for Jerome Avenue in the Bronx, a two-mile corridor starting at Yankee Stadium and ending near Fordham University. Local people were concerned this would lead to the type of unaffordable housing, job losses and cultural shifts that have affected other parts of New York and many other cities.

The COVID pandemic delayed some of the potential changes, but now they seem to be gathering speed. LSE Visiting Fellow Glyn Robbins, currently in the Bronx as a Fulbright Scholar attached to CUNY Graduate Center, has recorded a significant upsurge of new development along Jerome Avenue, possibly confirming local residents' worst fears.

At this talk, Glyn will present his provisional research findings and inviting discussion about what the Jerome Avenue experience may tell us about the future of cities.
