Looking for a Halloween-themed event that also gives you the opportunity to get active? Join our group and get ready to run for your life this October! :-P 👻

We will be traveling to Governors Island together as a group and meeting hundreds of other run participants. While this is a traditional 5k race, you don’t need to be an active runner to participate. All you need is yourself and a fun costume (not required, but encouraged) to maximize the chances for a good time!

Your entry includes a ferry ride, your race-entry, a snazzy t-shirt, post-race eats and a costume contest.

The Upper East Side is a neighborhood of Manhattan that has gained international fame from movies and TV shows like Gossip Girl and Sex & the City. It’s also home to iconic landmarks such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, 998 Fifth Ave, and the Cherokee Apartments. We will dive into the history of the area: particularly how it transformed from a poor ghetto to the home of NYC’s wealthy & elite.

 

Our guide, William Singer, AIA, is a Code and Zoning Specialist for The City of New York Department of Buildings Development and Technical Affairs. He is an expert in the design and construction of large-scale public facilities. His major projects have included justice centers, transportation hubs, and cultural centers. Before joining the Department of Buildings he was a partner at Gruzen Samton, a NYC & Virginia-based architecture, planning, interior design and systems engineering firm. A Fulbright fellow (Slovenia, 1993-94), he holds a Master of Architecture degree from the School of Design at North Carolina State University, as well as a Master of Arts in English from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In 2004, Singer received a City of New York Arts Commission Excellence in Design for the renovation design of El Museo Del Barrio.

Experience a day in the life of a NYC local! For this day-long event, you’ll be paired with a New York resident and at least one other international student, and together you’ll explore your host’s favorite things to do in the city. In the past, our hosts have taken students to visit their home, shared lunch at a restaurant in their neighborhood, walked the Brooklyn Bridge, explored an art gallery, and much more. This is a great opportunity to go beyond the famous sites of the city and learn about New York life and culture through the eyes of the people who live here.

Central Park is a great work of landscape architecture and a reflection of great changes in New York City. On our walk, which will be equal parts walking tour and urban hike, we’ll explore the northern end of the Park, which features many interesting landmarks and lush greenery. We start at the site of Seneca Village, a predominately African American community that was razed during the construction of Central Park, then view additions to the park that date to the New Deal of the 1930s. Afterwards, we’ll ascend the hilly northern end of the park, passing through dense woods and a stream bank. You’ll get the chance to explore the Great Hill and a blockhouse built in 1814 in anticipation of a British invasion that never actually happened. We’ll finish at Amsterdam Avenue and West 110th Street, near Columbia University, where there are many options for food and drinks. Please wear sturdy shoes that are good for walking!

 

About the Tour Guide: Robert W. Snyder is professor emeritus of American Studies and Journalism at Rutgers University and Manhattan Borough Historian. He is the author of Crossing Broadway: Washington Heights and the Promise of New York and coauthor of All the Nations Under Heaven: Immigrants, Migrants and the Making of New York. He is a former Fulbright lecturer in American Studies in Korea and a member of the New York Academy History. He is married to the journalist Clara Hemphill, who writes on public education in New York City.

Looking for a peaceful getaway in NJ? Join us for a day trip to Mountain Lakes, New Jersey with families who are excited to open their homes to international students for a day full of fun autumn activities and cultural exchange.

 

Students will be welcomed by their hosts at the bus stop and spend a leisurely afternoon with their host families taking part in different activities like hiking, baking, pumpkin carving, and exploring the neighborhood. Later on, all of the host families and students will come together for a potluck dinner and board games for all!
