Want to help cleanup Prospect Park in Brooklyn?

 

Join us and the Prospect Park Alliance to help care for its natural ecosystem. Volunteers will support areas near Vanderbilt St in its southwest region. Tasks might include mulching, path edging, weeding, picking up litter, and more. This is a great opportunity to spend a day outside, meet locals, and help the community.

 

For those of you who were unable to make it for the Welcome Cruise on October 18th, you still have opportunity to participate in this event, now rescheduled to November 7th!

 

Experience stunning views of the city and likely warm cooperative weather, while enjoying the best songs from around the world on One To World’s third ever welcome/fall cruise! You’ve likely absorbed the famous Manhattan skyline from the popular Staten Island Ferry, or from visits to other boroughs, but have you enjoyed these views on a party boat with a few hundred new and existing friends?

 

Celebrate the beginning of a new academic year by dancing the night away on the ship deck with a live DJ, 300 international students, and other friends of One To World! Also, to make up for the inconvenience our rescheduling has caused, there will be raffles, prizes and other giveaways all throughout for an even better cruise experience! Want to help prepare meals for those in need? At this event, you will be working alongside locals in a commercial kitchen to help assemble high-quality meals for people unable to do so themselves. You will experience the efficiency of the assembly line and the power of working with a common goal in mind! For those available afterwards, we’ll stop buy a local shop for some coffee or tea to connect further.

 

God’s Love We Deliver cooks and home-delivers nutritious, medically tailored meals for people too sick to shop or cook for themselves. All of their services are provided free and full of love to people in need. Volunteers will be in the kitchen helping on-staff chefs with a variety of projects. You will receive instructions from the staff member for the project of the day. Tasks may include packaging meals, chopping onions, making meatballs, ladling soup, peeling potatoes, scooping baked goods or preparing fresh herbs.

Want to visit a local farm in Manhattan?

 

The Battery Urban Farm is an educational farm where NYC students, locals, and visitors experience sustainable farming, taste organic fresh foods, and learn environmental stewardship. The farm was developed in 2011 by The Battery Conservancy in response to a request for a vegetable garden by students from a local high school. It now engages thousands of students and community volunteers who annually grow thousands of pounds of vegetables, fruits, herbs, grains, and flowers.

 

Volunteers assist with a range of tasks to maintain vegetable and forest farms, depending on what’s needed. Activities may include harvesting produce for donations, layering and turning compost, bed prep, weeding, mulching, and planting.

 

There might even be an opportunity to take home some fresh produce as a token of your hard work!

 

Make sense of the modern architecture of midtown Manhattan with commentary from an expert. The beautiful skyscrapers and unique designs give New York City its unique character. Join us on this architectural tour to learn more about the modernization of the city with our guide William Singer.

 

Our guide, William Singer, AIA, is a Code and Zoning Specialist for The City of New York Department of Buildings Development and Technical Affairs. He is an expert in the design and construction of large-scale public facilities. His major projects have included justice centers, transportation hubs, and cultural centers. Before joining the Department of Buildings he was a partner at Gruzen Samton, a NYC & Virginia-based architecture, planning, interior design and systems engineering firm. A Fulbright fellow (Slovenia, 1993-94), he holds a Master of Architecture degree from the School of Design at North Carolina State University, as well as a Master of Arts in English from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In 2004, Singer received a City of New York Arts Commission Excellence in Design for the renovation design of El Museo Del Barrio.

With this three-part workshop series, we will go over:

 

1. How to select an insurance plan and what to look for in coverage
2. How to actually use the plan you select, including visiting the doctor and understanding your benefits
3. How to read medical bills, what is an explanation of benefits, and what is an “insurance claim”

 

Join us for these workshops in collaboration with Leslie Reynolds, University Relations Manager at International Student Insurance, to make the most out of your insurance plan, and to help you become confident in navigating the US healthcare system!

Have you visited the suburbs north of NYC?

 

At this program, you’ll take a train from Grand Central to a small town named Chappaqua located in Westchester, NY. There’s a farmer’s market at the train station on Saturday mornings, so you’ll have a chance to see offerings from local vendors and farms from the Hudson Valley. You’ll also have a chance to explore the town before we take a trip to a nearby park for a leisurely hike.

 

Afterwards, we will gather at a local host’s house to hangout over games, music, refreshments and dinner.

 

Ticket does not include lunch or your train ticket. We encourage you to bring food or buy from the market or establishments in town.

 

Take advantage of a New York City summer tradition of 30 years! We are heading to Bryant Park for an outdoor movie night.

 

Our group will be arriving early to ensure a good spot on the grass and give us some time to play games, enjoy snacks that will be provided, and get to know one another.

 

This year we will be viewing the movie How To Lose a Guy in 10 Days, a classic romantic comedy about a man who bets his co-workers he can make a woman fall in love with him in just 10 days, and the woman he meets is attempting to do the opposite. Join us if you’re in the mood to laugh and make new friends!
