Join us for our second discussion and hear from two leaders in the corporate and academic world:
Harald Halbhuber is a partner in the Capital Markets practice at Shearman & Sterling, where he focuses on complex corporate finance transactions, representing issuers and investment banks in debt and equity offerings, high yield financings, debt restructurings and equity derivatives. He also advises clients on critical disclosure and financial reporting matters, an area on which he has authored several publications.

 

Martin Gelter, expert in comparative corporate law and governance, joined the faculty of Fordham Law School in 2009. He has been a Visiting Professor at National Taiwan University and University of Paris-II, a Considine Fellow in Law and Economics at Harvard Law School, a Visiting Fellow at the University of Bologna, and an assistant professor at the WU Vienna University of Economics. Martin has been an ECGI research member since 2006. Among other degrees, Martin holds an S.J.D. from Harvard Law School and an M.A. in Quantitative Methods for the Social Sciences from Columbia University.

 

As experts in corporate governance, Harald and Martin will speak on the importance of responsible corporate management and best practices in the field. They will share their professional experiences in the business and academic world and facilitate a conversation on this important topic that impacts all of us consumers, professionals, and global citizens. There will also be an opportunity for networking with the speakers and other attendees, as well as refreshments.

 

Attending this event is also an opportunity to qualify for a scholarship of up to $750!

To apply, please submit an essay here of no more than 900 words, answering the question: “What is the number one corporate governance issue in your home country and how would you address it?” There is a first-place prize of $750, and a second-place prize of $500, made possible by the Harold S. Geneen Charitable Trust. Please note, you MUST attend at least one session to qualify for the scholarship.

 

The application for the scholarship deadline is: Monday, April 22nd at 10:00AM EST. (There will be 1 more session in the spring.)

Are you curious to learn more about the education system in the US from the perspective of higher education? Are you interested understanding the difference between 4-year institutions and community colleges, as well as the workforce development programs that exist at these institutions? You’ll have the opportunity to hear from three higher education professionals as they offer some background about their respective institutions, as well as their transfer program partnership at this informative virtual session.

One To World Walk: Trip and Hike to Garrison, New York

Escape the city and experience some incredible Hudson River views in Garrison, New York!

 

We are once again heading to the Hudson Highlands to hike up Sugarloaf Mountain, this time in partnership with New York University! We will begin our day walking along the Hudson River and making our way up a moderately to slightly challenging (depending on experience) trek to the summit of Sugarloaf Mountain. The walk will be in a wooded area and steep, so please wear suitable outdoor shoes, long pants, and bring lots of water.

 

Afterwards, we will explore the town of Garrison and all that is has to offer! From quaint antique shops, cafes, and a lovely waterfront, it will be the perfect chance to see it all before heading back to the train station.

 

Ticket will not include lunch or your train ticket. We encourage you to bring lunch with you and we will enjoy it on the top of the mountain!

Day at the Beach: Rockaway Beach, NY

Ready for a day at the beach? This summer we are heading to Rockaway Beach in Queens, New York!

 

Also known as, 'Irish Riviera' due to its large Irish American population, Rockaway provides the perfect beach escape! Along the boardwalk you will find a variety of great shops, from vintage apparel to surfing gear, as well as many affordable food trucks. Explore all that Rockaway Beach has to offer while getting a chance to relax in the summer sun.

 

Don't miss the chance to escape the city heat, go for a swim in the Atlantic Ocean, and experience a typical seaside boardwalk!

Ticket cost includes roundtrip ferry ride from Manhattan. In case of rain, the beach day will be rescheduled to the following Friday, August 4th.

Our Enrichment Programs Global Fellow, who will be leading the group, is a fellow Italian and can confirm the authenticity of Ferdi's products, whose history began three generations ago in Ponza, an Italian island. This workshop will cater to individuals who use English as a second language and struggle to converse in English. You can expect to gain effective delivery, spontaneity and an improved ability of storytelling. In addition, you will learn to improve your delivery skills for presentations and networking events.

One To World Walk: The Two Squares – Union to Madison

Are you curious about the urban design principles that shaped NYC? Don't miss our next walking tour!

 

We'll be spending time in Gramercy Park and the Flatiron District to explore the concepts behind the city grid. We will also learn how public parks like Madison and Union Square were built to accommodate irregular spaces. This is an interactive opportunity to gain insights into the architectural evolution from 1811 to the present. You will gain a new perspective and appreciation for urban planning!

 

Our guide, William Singer, AIA, is a Code and Zoning Specialist for The City of New York Department of Buildings Development and Technical Affairs. He is an expert in the design and construction of large-scale public facilities. His major projects have included justice centers, transportation hubs, and cultural centers. Before joining the Department of Buildings he was a partner at Gruzen Samton, a NYC & Virginia-based architecture, planning, interior design and systems engineering firm. A Fulbright fellow (Slovenia, 1993-94), he holds a Master of Architecture degree from the School of Design at North Carolina State University, as well as a Master of Arts in English from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In 2004, Singer received a City of New York Arts Commission Excellence in Design for the renovation design of El Museo Del Barrio.

 

In case of rain, the event will be held one week later on June 25th.
