Think you know Central Park? There’s much more to discover beyond the familiar lawns, bridges, and paths of Midtown.

Join us for an afternoon exploring the wilder, lesser-known northern side of Central Park, where centuries of New York history are hidden among wooded trails, rocky hills, streams, and unexpected landmarks.

Part walking tour and part urban hike, we’ll begin at the site of Seneca Village, the predominantly African American community displaced during the creation of Central Park. From there, we’ll trace different chapters of the park’s history, from New Deal-era additions to a blockhouse built in 1814 to defend New York against a British invasion that never came.

Along the way, we’ll leave some of Central Park’s busier paths behind to explore dense woods, a stream bank, and the Great Hill — offering a completely different perspective on one of New York City’s most famous places.

We’ll finish near Amsterdam Avenue and West 110th Street, close to Columbia University and plenty of spots to continue the afternoon over food or drinks.

Come ready to walk! This route includes hills and uneven terrain, so sturdy, comfortable shoes are strongly recommended.

About Your Guide

Robert Snyder, professor emeritus of American Studies and Journalism at Rutgers University, has spent his career bringing New York history to life for a broad public. A former Fulbright lecturer in American Studies, Rob has written six books on New York City and served as Manhattan Borough Historian from 2019–2025. His latest book, When the City Stopped: Stories from New York’s Essential Workers, won the LaGuardia Book Prize.
