DESCRIPTION:Do you know why reading is so important for kids? It helps them expand their vocabulary\, perform better academically\, and allows their imagination to run wild. Also\, children who do not read on grade-level by the end of third grade are four times less likely to graduate high school on time. \n  \nAlthough low-income families have\, on average\, four children’s books in their homes\, a team of researchers concluded that nearly two-thirds\, or 61% of the low-income families\, owned no books for their children. \n  \nThat’s where Brooklyn Book Bodega comes in. From 2000 to 2003\, Mr. Sack was an Associate in the Mergers and Acquisitions Group at Goldman Sachs. This beloved Christmas service begins with a musical prelude at 3:45 pm and will include musical contributions by the Cathedral Choirs as they celebrate the birth of the light. \n  \nDecember 24\, 10pm – 11:59pm : Christmas Eve Festival Eucharist\nMerry Christmas! In her talk\, she will discuss changing the world with music: insights from Music as a Global Resource. \n  \nAs the world comes to grips with the far-reaching impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic\, the role of music\, the arts\, and cultural understanding has become more important than ever. As the current pandemic has highlighted\, we are in need of creative solutions to the challenges facing communities and societies at large. This presentation will share powerful examples that demonstrate how music can play a role in solving some of the most difficult problems of our time from mental and physical illness\, to poverty\, natural disasters\, and war. These examples will come from the Music as a Global Resource Compendium (5th Edition)\, produced for the United Nations 75th Anniversary by Fulbright Senior Scholar Professor Brydie-Leigh Bartleet and her Fulbright Host at NYU Professor Barbara Hesser. This edition features 109 exemplary projects that are using music to contribute towards the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). DESCRIPTION:Are you interested in learning more about the U.S. federal and state governments during your Fulbright experience in the states? New York will be electing a new governor in November of this year and the primary elections will be taking place in just a few months. The election process in the U.S. is quite unique compared to most other countries and we have organized a panel discussion with experts in the field to help shed light on how it all works! \n  \nDuring this virtual talk\, you will hear from: \n\n\n\n\n\nAnika Michel\, Strategic Monitoring and Government Relations Attachée at Québec Government Office in New York. Anika previously worked in the Office of the New York City Public Advocate as Policy and Legislative Associate\, and is a former Fulbright grantee to Spain. Anika will speak to how government works in the U.S. on both a macro and micro level\, and as Co-Founder/Director of Marketing at Amplify Her\, she will also offer insight into the gender parity in elected offices\, both in New York\, and throughout the country.\nErin Stamper\, Elections Specialist\, Chatham\, New York. Erin is also the current Deputy Commissioner of the Columbia County Board of Elections in New York. Erin will share with students about the process of campaigning during a general election\, what that entails\, and how that might differ from other countries.\nRobert Stein\, Dean of Social Sciences\, College of Liberal Arts & Sciences\, Alfred University. Robert has over 25 years experience in academia as a professor with a focus on political science. SUMMARY:Community Service: Bag Books for Kids in Need with Brooklyn Book Bodega
DESCRIPTION:Did you love to read when you were a kid? Studies show that children who grow up around books are far more likely to succeed in school and find work as adults. However\, up to 61% of low-income families do not have any books for their kids at home. \n  \nThat’s where Brooklyn Book Bodega comes in. Brooklyn Book Bodega works with local schools and community centers to gather and distribute books to underprivileged families in Brooklyn. During this program\, you’ll volunteer with other international students to sort and stamp the Bodega’s books to prepare them for distribution to the community. This is a great opportunity to help New York’s schoolchildren develop a love of reading alongside other international students! \n  \nPlease note that we will travel together by ferry to the program. The fare is $2.75 one way ($5.50 round trip)\, so please bring money for transportation or download the NYC Ferry app on your phone to purchase an e-ticket.
